Don Shafer of Schneider Optics | Interview snippets from NAB BuZZ 2018 podcasts with Larry Jordan
Larry Jordan: When would somebody pick a Schneider lens versus somebody else's, a lot of lenses from a lot of different companies. What criterion should you use for picking a lens?
Don Shafer: It depends on what you're shooting. Some of it might be physical characteristics of the lens itself, be it needing a requirement in terms of image circle, it could be a physical requirement, working in very tight spaces or on an apparatus that might have to be compact so there's lots of different issues going into it.
But of course, the field of view, the focal length, the speed of the lens, the performance of the lens obviously, there's a number of different factors. But generally speaking, cinema photographers want a particular look and they know the characteristics of each lens, they all have their unique look and that's what they're after, to try to have something signature that they know they can depend on for that particular shoot.
LJ: Well, it's a true statement that every manufacturer's lenses look different. But how do you manage to maintain a consistent look across all Schneider lenses?
DS: It's a secret recipe for sure. But we've been able to do that. In fact, we have two different lines of lenses here like I mentioned but they can be interchanged. We've designed them so that they color match. That's the biggest difference, is you want them all to match in color.
