Tema L. Staig of Women In Media | Interview snippets from NAB BuZZ 2019 podcasts with Larry Jordan
Larry Jordan: Welcome back. It's day four at the NAB Show. You'd think we'd be exhausted by now, but throughout the room is pretty darn amazing. There's people at every booth and all the booths are busy and the thing I like best about it is much of the crowd is gone. This is the time to get the best conversations with people because you're not fighting through hordes; you're able to talk right to the people that have the answers and a person that I've been wanting to talk to since I first saw her on our guest list is the woman sitting next to me. Her name is Tema Staig. She's the executive director of Women in Media. Tema, welcome.
Tema L. Staig: Hi. Thank you so much for inviting me.
Larry Jordan: Oh, it is my pleasure. I've been looking forward to this conversation for weeks. Tell me what Women in Media does.
Tema L. Staig: So we are a 501(c)(3) organization. We encourage inclusion and diversity in the entertainment industries, above and below the line. We are working towards 40 to 60% crew that are women in every department, every project and just across every industry. We would like to see parity and, for us, that's 40 to 60%. If you want to have more women, we're not going to complain.
Larry Jordan: I'm going to ask why the organization started. And, of course, we know all the scandals that have been going in Hollywood and it's an obvious response, but why was the organization started?
Tema L. Staig: Because I was working at a school where the women needed some encouragement and help and they needed some people to kind of help them know that they weren't alone in the industry and that they could actually have a voice within the industry and do well. So it started there and it got very, very popular and we had to take it out of the school because there was such a need for what we were doing to connect these women.
