Larry Jordan: Our ability to hear frequency is on 400 samples per second. What does the additional sample rate give us? And I'm also going to ask you what does the additional bit depth gives us?

Ric Viers: The additional sample rate allows us, especially with sound design, to reduce the amount of noise when things are pitched down and not as much pitched up, but definitely when they're pitched down, and then when they're also ran through several plug ins and things like that. That helps as well as the bit depth which lowers the noise as well.

LJ: So, if all we're doing is recording a conversation, a 96k sample rate is not going to make a difference but as we start to manipulate the audio and bend it and add effects, having the additional bits to work with is going to help us?

RV: Yeah. Production dialogue at 48 is totally fine, and that's pretty much industry standard but for the sound design guys we try to do 96k or higher, yeah.

LJ: Cool. Now I understand. I was always wondering about this because I would see a choice that says 192k sample rate and I say,  "This makes no sense whatsoever." So, you can play with it and make it sound really awful. I'm sorry, really incredible.

RV: I do my best, yes.
