Ralph Hogan of IEEE Broadcast Technology Society | Interview snippets from NAB BuZZ 2018 podcasts

Larry Jordan: We're sitting at NAB, which is, I would say, the heart of broadcast technology today, and we're in a booth on connected media where everybody is getting their information via ethernet and over the Internet. One could argue that broadcast is not particularly useful these days. How would you counter that argument?

Ralph Hogan: Define broadcast.

LJ: Over the air transmission.

RH: Okay, well that's different from broadcast.

LJ: How would you differentiate?

RH: Broadcast is the distribution from one to many. Now, it doesn't say it has to be RF. You could do it over IP, you could do it in any other distribution method, even Bluetooth.

LJ: So, we can consider our podcast to be broadcast?

RH: In a broad definition, yes. Most people think of broadcasters, traditional broadcasters, as a transmitter large power or high power and just peaching to a local area, but because of the technology changes, we are now basically not limited to a local community. Broadcasters have web streaming sites for their content and the content goes worldwide. So, it's still distribution one to many.
