Les Zellan of Cooke Optics | Interview snippets from NAB BuZZ 2018 podcasts with Larry Jordan

Larry Jordan: It would seem to me that the cameras are getting lighter than the lenses are; so you'd want to support the lens not the camera.

Les Zellan: That's pretty true. So right now, the camera can be hanging off the back of the lens. But fortunately for me, while electronics keeps shrinking, cameras and physics and glass and light stay pretty much the same.

LJ: Which means that we get to talk about some of the new stuff you're coming up with. So how are you manipulating the physics of light these days?

LZ: The same way we always did. The laws of physics don't change for too many people, and certainly not for Cooke. Lens making isÔøΩ refraction. Obviously, the glasses have different color characteristics and refractoring characteristics but it's always physics, or complicated physics, as the case may be.

LJ: I think it's simple to explain and complex to do.

LZ: My designers want to make sure that I think it's complex. They know that it is. People want lenses to do more and more. They want them small, they want them light, they want them fast. So, to do all of this can get very complex.
