Ranges are fundamental to editing in Final Cut Pro X. Combine them with transcripts and you've got a powerful way to sort, find, and mark key moments in clips. But how do you get transcript ranges in the first place? In this guide, we'll show you how to use the Simon Says native FCPX integration to auto-generate ranges with accurate transcripts for your clips. Let's get started!

1. Download/Install extension

Download Simon Says from the Mac App Store. Launch the extension and create a new project by clicking the plus sign.

2. Import clips and transcribe

Drag and drop your clips (regular, multicam, sync, and compound) from your FCPX event into the new Simon Says project. Then select the language of the clips, click ‘Transcribe' and pay (new users get free credit).

3. Edit transcript, bookmark snippets, and add speaker labels

Your AI-generated transcript is ready to review in minutes. Click ‘Edit’ to launch the nift video-transcript editor to create or join new rows, as well as create FCPX metadata. Highlight text and bookmark for FCPX Favorites or strikethrough to reject ranges. You can also add speaker labels by clicking on the caret icon. Don’t worry about timecodes – Simon Says will manage that for you.

4. Export transcript ranges back to FCPX clips

Keep Simon Says open. Go to ‘Export’ > ‘Final Cut Pro X’, and select ‘Ranges’. Drag and drop the ranges icon into your event in FCPX and your clips will be automatically updated with transcript ranges and other metadata.

Nice job! Your FCPX clips now have transcribed ranges making it so much easier to search and sort through your clips and find your favorite moments to include in your edit.
